Happy Thanksgiving!

The sun that shines upon the earth;
The wonder of a baby’s birth;
The moon that radiates at night;
With stars that shine a brilliant light;

The showers that refresh the land;
The plant and bud on every hand;
The lofty trees with mighty roots;
The shrubs and vines and tiny shoots;

The waving grain and great blue sky;
The harvest time with its supply;
The spring and summer, cold and snow—
Declare a thing, a message show

They speak of a Creator’s love,
And show a Father’s heart above
They tell of He who holds our days,
And guards our very path and ways

The sense of sight, and touch, and smell;
The workings of the human cell;
The steady beating of the heart;
The complexity of every part;

The bounties on our table spread,
Or water with a little bread;
And that which for the soul we gain—
The Bread from Him that will sustain—

The Sabbath with its joyful rest,
Of which we are so richly blessed;
And then the Gift of gifts, the One
Whose glory outshines star and sun;

These things continually retell,
That God above does all things well
They show a love surpassing thought,
In all these gifts displayed and wrought

Continually the evidence,
Of our God’s benevolence,
Tells His love and sings His praise—
Then why not our thanksgiving raise?

Trust

Could we peel away the sky,
Could we answer every "Why",
Could we plumb the waters deep or ocean wide
Could we look into the realm
Of the waves that overwhelm,
Or explain the ebb and flow of lunar tide

Could we answer every doubt,
And describe our total route,
Could we map our lives from genesis and on
Could we always, fully know,
Would we ever fully grow,
In the faith that sees at night the morning dawn?

For the faith that has it's sight,
And is strengthened with the night,
When tested, proved, comes forth a brighter gold
Through days of darkness now,
With trusting we can bow,
And with thanks, commit to Him what's yet untold!

God's Detours

When traveling the paths of earth,
The road may often turn
But it’s God’s timing we unearth,
If we His ways will learn

Often looking as we do,
His trail seems drab and plain,
When where we’d planned to travel through
Seems better ground to gain

We see the beauty that we think
Will make our route so bright,
And fail to note the rose or pink
That blooms the more at night

We think it not the quickest way
To get right to our goal,
But God’s detours will repay
A wealth into the soul

At first the scen’ry may not charm
His way appear quite bleak,
But Heaven knoweth every harm
From which to guard the meek

And when we turn into His will
And give up on our own,
More than our dreams He’ll fulfill
For in us His are sown

One day our eyes will see above
And understand His ways,
And for the detours of love
We’ll lift our hearts in praise

So now my friends, when corners come
Do not give place to gloom,
For it is in God’s detours
That His promises will bloom.

A Compass, a Question, and an Amazing God

      Fresh, clean, quiet. There are few times in a week I relish more than Friday night. The tide of the week has receded. Little pools alone remain as it were, calm and still. The light of day softens to gold, gilding the evening as if in welcome.

We sit, usually. Absorbed in something of study, or thought, or just in the picture out the window. And then it happens. Someone looks up. It could be any of us. We all know the routine. But we all love it, and somebody has to start it.

Shall we talk about what we’re thankful for?

And thus ensues the evening.

Sometimes when discouragement or weariness threatens, we widen the mold. Friday night, Sunday night, Tuesday morning, it doesn’t matter. What are you thankful for?

It’s a kind of calibration system, a compass for where we’re at. Disappointments and trials may come, but thanksgiving notwithstanding acknowledges that we have received good at the hand of God. That we receive, and God gives.

And His giving is good. For that is the way He is.

Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise Thee. Thus I will bless Thee while I live. Psalm 63:3-4

The reality that God is, (that merciful, gracious, righteous, is He, and that He is real), is enough to supply the fund of our praise.

Take out your compass. Maybe it’s dusty. Maybe it’s had recent use, but regardless, it bares a loaded question. Loaded that is, with health-giving, life-giving, blessing:

What are you thankful for?

In spite of night...

No encouragement here to sing more than you pray. But simply put, when your songs are prayers, by all means sing them.

You see, there is a power in relying, allying, and complying with Omnipotence that sets the heart at peace. And from that peace, we can sing.

Duty may call perpendicular to desire. Shadows may seek to claim the sunbeams.

But in the gathering dusk, let me tell you there is power in praise…

...to bring peace and delight in spite of the night. When you’d rather be between cotton and quilt, or when you’d rather see the dawn.

When shadows cross your road,
Sing a song.
When heavy weighs your load,
Sing a song.
When darkness presses round,
Let the praise to God abound,
And thanksgiving then resound,
Sing a song.

When duty's call is hard,
Sing a song.
When from the battle scarred,
Sing a song.
For the Lord is on His throne,
Still He careth for His own,
And my friend, you're not alone,
Sing a song.

Impossible Prayers & Morning Miracles

Birds sing. Red and gold streak across pastel blue as if crowning a miracle. The coolness and freshness of morning air caress sleep from my eyes. Today dawns a miracle, but another miracle captivates now.

Not that God gives good gifts… He does.

Not that God cares for temporal necessities… He does.

Not that He owns hills of gold, and cattle times thousands… He does.

It’s that…  He rules in the impossible.

That a child’s prayer is heard by the King of the Universe. That He finds no complexity in our perplexity. That unfeasible realities, farfetched dreams, impossible hopes- to human sight, look very different to Omnipotence.

A miracle times two, but really beyond numbering floods my heart with wonder. Two and half years ago, two and a half really solid impossibilities stood in my path. And really, it doesn't matter what impossibilities face us. Today, the answer is two inches from my eyes: God rules the impossible.

  God’s working is miraculous.
  His storehouse is sufficient.
  His answers to prayer are as sure as His name.

...and that's present tense.

Philippians: 118 Rejoice

“What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.” Philippians 1:18

Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice—
With heart and soul and voice!
For God will triumph in the end,
Therein should we rejoice.

Rejoice when times are tough.
For Jesus is enough,
To ease the sting of scorn and slight,
And soften each rebuff.

Rejoice when what we see,
So dark appears to be,
For God can work it out for good,
And that’s a guarantee!

Philippians: 116 Sufficient

“The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:” Philippians 1:16

There were people in Paul’s world
Who didn’t know the gospel,
Who, yet it’s gonfalon unfurled
To burden the apostle.

These worked from strife and envy
To cause another grief,
But Paul of Tarsus knew the key
To find happy relief.

He dwelt amid thanksgiving.
He looked beyond that day.
He thought on Christ’s own suffering
For what he couldn’t pay.

And so, let’s learn the lesson
Of patience, as did Paul.
For Christ has drunk for everyone
The cup of woe and gall.

We need not dwell in shadows
When Jesus shines with light,
And from Him peace and gladness flows,
Sufficient for the night.

Philippians: 103 Remember

“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” Philippians 1:3.

The Philippians? Really? Maybe some of those memories, but every remembrance?

Philippi was the home of Lydia, whose heart the Lord opened. - Acts 16:14. Certainly the memory of kindred souls in the faith could have made Paul to thank God.

Of course, remembering the damsel that was freed from the spirit of divination surely brought rejoicing to the apostle. But this very joy could have been overshadowed, or even obliterated completely by black recollections. Missionary work is not for the fainthearted. It was in Philippi that Paul and Silas were beaten, imprisoned, and tortured like anybody’s worst nightmare. And yet, the apostle thanked God.

Was it the dawn of new life in Christ that eclipsed the darkness? Was it the eye of faith, seeing triumph in apparent tragedy? Was is that souls were reached, who could not have been in another way?

Did every memory of the Philippians remind Paul that God can overrule circumstances? That something so bad could actually result in good— devoted, stedfast, and whole-hearted believers? Did the thought of their faithfulness strengthen him to trust in trial the character of his Creator?

We likely face nothing akin to what Paul and Silas did, but from the planet we call home, let us give thanks. Let us remember that the character of God has not changed. He can still bring beauty out of ashes, and gold from the fire.

Let us remember, and let us give thanks.

Heaven's Mending Basket

      I looked in surprise at my bedspread, needle and thread in hand. I knew it was coming apart, but not quite that much! :| The ever so small section of a separating seam no longer was. All the more reason to mend it, I mused.

      Mending is a task that proffers ample opportunity to think, and as duty called to the former, I settled in to do some of the latter.

      First of all, I knew the condition of my bedspread. It had had a hole. Yet this knowledge was not sufficient stimulus for correcting said deficiency right away. So finally, priority has uncovered it. How often do I wait for a more convenient season to attend to a hole in the soul? How often do I brush aside the knowledge of my flaws with the self-assurance that it will be okay for today? ...that it is "good enough"?

      Secondly, I did not know the condition of my bedspread. The true state of its disrepair might as well have been a mystery. What's startling about this is that the hole was right under my nose. Literally. Top blanket, middle section, as plain as stain. Getting worse all the time, but yours truly was in complete oblivion. Let me just say that naturally, I am conscious of such things... all the more reason this comes home. "Because thous sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; (my blanket is practically fine, really!) and knowest not that thou art wretched” (your blanket really is not fine). - Revelation 3:17. The holes may be unknown or ignored, but that by no means alters the reality of their presence, or the progression of disintegration.

      Lastly, I know the condition of my bedspread is better than it used to be. It had had a hole, but no more. “…He which hath begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” - Philippians 1:6. There is a solution to the pollution of a soul. We don’t have to remain in stained, hole-ridden garment. There is a robe to be had of one piece, purest white, no cuts, no stains. But we have to buy it. There is a price. It is costly. Obedience, not ours, but Another’s obedience, molded out of our life. The Amen, the beginning of the creation of God, the first and the last, the I AM, He, humbled Himself; the One who was, and is, and is to come, He, “became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” - Philippians 2:8. … so that He could give us a garment without holes… a character that won’t fray… an obedience above compromise.  Amazing doesn’t begin to tell it.

      Well, the stitchery is done, but the character is still in the making. In the mean time however, praise God for heaven's mending basket! :)

A Song to Sing

There is a song I have to sing
Of simple praise unto my King
For He has laid His grace on me
Who would be lost eternally

Were it not for the gift of One
Who loved me as His only Son
Who lived and loved and sought and died
Between two robbers crucified

I could not taste His grace so sweet
Nor ever hope His face to meet
I could not be made pure and white
Had God not pitied human plight

But pitied He and more than this
He walked on earth in holiness
That not of man's nor angel's heart
But of God's own He will impart

No seriph knows the Father's grace
But Adam's sinful, helpless race
Can taste and see its matchless strength
Its height and depth, and endless length

That human flesh- corrupt with sin
Could become pure and whole within
Is tribute to the grace of One
Who will not cease what He's begun

For even in eternity
Upon that clearest crystal sea
This song the saints will ever raise
In earnest, heartfelt, grateful praise

To Him who brought new life and birth,
To dying sinners on this earth
Not just in "them" this change to be,
But also Lord, I pray in me!

Praise God!

      The day after...

      To see such love to the lovers expressed in service... hard work... coordination... practice... prayers... faith... from so many precious people. It's a memory that I will cherish.

      Words fail. What can I say but Praise God?

            Indeed, words may fail, but our God will not. Did not. Has not. No, never.

Praise God.
